1579: Galileo is sent to the monastery at Santa Maria di Vallobrosa and considers staying.
July 1579: Galileo returns home.
1581: Galileo studies at the University of Pisa.
1589-1592: He teaches mathematics at the University of Pisa.
1591: Vincenzo Galilei dies and leaves Galileo to lead the family.
1592: Galileo lectures on geometry and astronomy at the University of Padua in the Venetian Republic and remains there until 1610.
1608: The telescope is invented in Netherlands.
1609: Galileo makes improvements on the telescope. His design is able to magnify 20 times. He uses it to look at the night sky.
October 1609: He discovers that the Moon’s surface is uneven and earth-like.
January 1610: He discovers the first four moons of Jupiter and publishes his book; The Starry Messenger.
December 1610: He discovers that Venus has phases and adopts the Copernican system.
April 1611: Galileo’s discoveries are verified by Jesuit mathematicians, though they do not agree with his interpretations of them.
1616: The belief that the earth goes around the sun is formally declared a heresy. Cardinal Bellarmine warns Galileo not to support or teach Copernican beliefs.
April 1633: Galileo is interrogated by the inquisition and is sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life.
January 1642: Galileo dies.
1835: Galileo’s Dialogue is taken off of the Church’s prohibited books list.
1992: The Church formally acknowledges that Galileo was right.
